What's Your Play Personality?
🚀 Yo MotivatEM Squad!
Last week, I introduced the idea of weaving "play" into our work - a seemingly counterintuitive approach that's actually crucial for not just doing more, but doing more of what truly matters. A concept known as "Feel Good Productivity," as proposed by Ali Abdaal, moving away from toxic productivity towards a lifestyle that’s both sustainable and fulfilling. This means using our talents to positively impact others.
Let me tell you guys how I've been trying to employ this in my everyday work. One method from Ali Abdaal's Book involves adopting "Play Personalities" to inject fun and creativity into tasks. I've found that embodying the "Storyteller" and "Joker" personas has transformed how I approach work, making it enjoyable and even humorous at times. By viewing tasks through these playful lenses, work becomes less of a chore and more of an engaging story or joke, making the mundane memorable.
This approach might not suit everyone, which is why it’s just one of many "experiments" to try. The goal is to find what enhances your engagement with work. For me, adopting play personalities has been incredibly effective.
Curious about finding your play personality? Let's chat! It could change your perspective on work.
The 8 Play Personalities (Taken directly from "Feel Good Productivity" by Ali Abdaal):
The Collector loves to gather and organize, enjoying activities like searching for rare plants, or rummaging around in archives or garage sales.
The Competitor enjoys games and sports, and takes pleasure in trying their best and winning.
The Explorer likes to wander, discovering new places and things they’ve never seen, through hiking, road tripping and other adventures.
The Creator finds joy in making things, and can spend hours every day drawing, painting, making music, gardening and more.
The Storyteller has an active imagination and uses their imagination to entertain others. They’re drawn to activities like writing, dance, theatre and role-playing games.
The Joker endeavors to make people laugh, and may play by performing stand-up, doing improv, or just pulling a lot of pranks to make you smile.
The Director likes to plan, organise and lead others, and can fit into many different roles and activities, from directing stage performances to running a company, to working in political or social advocacy.
The Kinesthete finds play in physical activities like acrobatics, gymnastics and free running.
💡 Tech I'm Nerding out On & Productivity/Study Hacks
So, I've totally jumped headfirst into Ali Abdaal's Focus Crash Course, and let me tell you, it's been a total eye-opener. Ever heard of Ultradian Rhythms? Well, they're a game changer. Scheduling blocks of 90 minute sessions where you do “Deep Work” which can mean anything to anyone, but for me it means doing MKSAP questions and reviewing Anki. The key is taking at least 20 minute breaks AWAY from whatever your deep work is, allowing your mind to do more. I was so used to just piling through my work by sheer discipline and motivation, but it doesn’t have to be that hard. It turns out the key to doing more, was actually doing less. It's all about working smarter, not harder, and honestly, it's been a game-changer for me. Stick around, because I'm just getting started on sharing the gems I've found on this journey.
