Doing Less to Do More
Yo MotivatEM Squad! 🚀
Last time we caught up, I was all about those 90-minute deep work sessions, right? Well, I briefly mentioned the 20-minute breaks but didn't fully explain the game-changer - creating "White Space" for productivity magic. 🧙
I discovered this dope productivity hack through Ali Abdaal—"White Space," is a concept by Juliet Funt which she speaks about in her book, “A Minute to Think.” In short, “White Space” is intentionally leaving moments in your day open, focusing on taking 15-20 minute breaks to recharge between intense work sessions.
Ali covered this in his Focus Crash Course (linked here), and it's brilliant. The idea is simple yet effective. The picture below illustrates this concept (taken from Ali's Focus Crash Course). "White Space" isn't about doing more but about doing better by taking strategic breaks. Think of your calendar not as a to-do list but as a canvas with free spots for yourself. Those short breaks? They’re golden for your mental health 🌿
Here's something important - using breaks to scroll through Instagram or check emails might seem good, but actually, it drains you more. Irony, right?
My Week with "White Space":
I lived those "White Space" moments, choosing rewarding breaks over screen time. I found my rhythm with activities like cleaning my sanctuary (aka my room), getting a quick workout in, playing guitar, or taking a walk. These breaks have revolutionized my workflow. One minute I'm enjoying the sun, the next, I'm energized for work. 🎸⚡
I've learned the 'what' and 'where' of activities matter a lot. Stepping away from my desk has transformed my work, boosting my creativity and productivity. Finding inspiring places is key. Keep it fresh and moving to see the magic.
Now, I'm curious about your "White Space." What activities help you recharge and come back stronger? I’m eager to hear your ideas!
Always Do What You Love,
J
